ABOUT BULK PACKING TAPE
Packing tape is typically pressure sensitive, meaning that it will adhere to a surface when you apply pressure to its backing. Though its most common application is in sealing the flaps of cardboard boxes and other packaging materials to better transport them, it’s a highly versatile product. It can be beneficial for reinforcing boxes, securing objects, bundling or unitizing packages and pallets, and creating sharp edges while painting. FILAMENT TAPE
As the name suggests, filament tape is embedded with fiberglass filaments to enhance its strength and the integrity of its seal. Heavy-duty filament tape is pressure sensitive, with applications in secure carton closing, strapping, and bundling.
MASKING TAPE
Masking or painter’s tape is one of the most commonly used packaging tapes on the market. This versatile product typically has a rubber-based, pressure-sensitive adhesive with an easy-release paper backing. The tape itself is easy to remove from surfaces, as well, all without resulting in damage, and it’s simple to dispense and tear for easy use because of its low adhesion. An optimal choice for both consumer and industrial applications, it has uses in labeling and bundling in addition to sealing and painting.
SEALING TAPE
These pressure-sensitive tapes are gummed paper varieties that are advantageous for their adhesion strength. Sealing tape has applications in sealing fiberboard or corrugated boxes.
VINYL TAPE
One of the best tapes on the market for its sticking power, vinyl tape offers a long-lasting seal that’s ideal for closing up cardboard boxes. It features enhanced tear resistance compared to polypropylene (PP) varieties. Vinyl tape also displays thermal resistance, and its ability to withstand low temperatures makes it a perfect solution for refrigerated applications since the adhesive won’t become inert. The tape generates less noise during application and is easy to handle from a dispenser or by hand.
REINFORCED TAPE
Reinforced packing tape is ideal for heavy-duty use due to its extreme strength and sticking capability. It’s reinforced with glass filaments that make it more difficult to tear. Reinforced tape also offers versatility, as it’s compatible with plastic, metal, paper, and cardboard materials.
ACRYLIC (MACHINE & HAND)
Acrylic tape consists of two layers: one made of emulsion acrylic adhesive and the other of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film. While this tape can be more costly than standard bulk packing tapes, it can withstand a broader temperature range for greater application flexibility. HOT MELT (MACHINE & HAND)
Also called hot glue, hot melt tape is a thermoplastic adhesive tape that achieves a much higher level of adhesion, shear value, and tensile strength than acrylic varieties, all with quick tack. At Stamar Packaging, we offer hot melt hand tape and hot melt machine tape. They can also maintain their integrity in temperatures ranging between 45º F and 120º F. Common hot melt applications include cartoning — particularly when a carton is overstuffed or it uses recycled packaging material —and equipment-applied tapes.
CARTON SEALING TAPES
With a film carrier of PVC, PP, or paper, carton sealing tapes are designed for environment-specific applications. They have varied adhesive system options of acrylic and natural or hot-melt rubber. While PVC material allows for film backings in various colors, PP- and paper-based tapes have tan or clear backings.
WATER-ACTIVATED TAPES
Gummed tape or gummed paper tape are water-activated packing tapes for sealing packages, with the adhesive reacting when you apply moisture. Utilizing either a starch-based or animal glue adhesive, water-activated tapes often have a backing of Kraft paper.
